Calhoun to Kick-off New Weekend Associate’s Degree Program

For those who have wanted to earn their associate’s degree but have been unable to find the time to commit to a traditional college schedule, Calhoun Community College’s new TIME (Taking Initiative to Maximize Education) may be the answer.

Starting in August 2012, the new condensed weekend program will allow students to earn their two-year degree by attending classes only on the weekends.  The program is designed for students who have the added challenges of jobs, families and other responsibilities.

According to Terri Bryson, dean of Calhoun’s Huntsville campus, the program will offer two degree concentrations: Business and Administrative Skills.  “Both degree options are designed to give students the skills they need  in the job market, and both offer a pathway for transfer to a four-year university, Bryson said.

“We are excited about this new program and the doors it will open for those students who need some flexibility in their schedule in order to continue or start their postsecondary education,” commented Bryson.  “Our new condensed weekend program is ideal for those students who work during the week or have childcare challenges that might prevent them from attending class during our traditional times,” she added.

Students enrolled in the program will take one class at a time in 3-week increments, attending on Friday evenings, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday afternoon.  Classes will include some on-line work, as well.  Students will attend class for three consecutive weeks, have one weekend off, and begin a new class with the next 3-week session.  All classes will be held at Calhoun’s Huntsville campus, located in Cummings Research Park.   For those who just need to pick up a class on the weekend, slots will be available to accommodate them.

Tuition for the TIME program is the same as Calhoun’s regular tuition, and financial aid is available for qualified students.  However, due to the program’s sequence of classes, the frequency of a student’s financial aid disbursement may be altered.

Those interested in registering for the TIME condensed weekend associate’s degree program should call 256-890-4710 or visit the website at for additional information.

Open registration for general  fall semester classes begins June 13, 2012.
