Calhoun Community College Reviews All Online Courses with Quality Matters

Student success, completion, and retention rates to be reported out for follow-up research project
Decatur, AL – In an effort to certify all of its online courses, Calhoun Community College announced today that it is having more than 200 courses reviewed using the Quality Matters (QM) Higher Education Rubric this year.
“Reviewing what is essentially all of our online courses at Calhoun will give the institution a complete picture of the quality of our online program and where there may exist areas for improvement,” commented Calhoun President Dr. James Klauber.
Calhoun is also working with QM to have 18-20 faculty and staff from the college become certified QM Peer Reviewers. This certification will allow these individuals from the college to conduct internal course reviews while maintaining the integrity of the QM Course Review process.
“We wanted an outside organization to provide our course reviews, and Quality Matters has the expertise to certify online courses for quality,” said Chris Alexander, Digital Media & Distance Learning Manager, at Calhoun.
“Our goal once the review process is complete is to begin tracking online student success, completion, and retention data for all online courses over the next 5 years, beginning with our 2016 Fall semester. Any concerning trends that are discovered over the next 5 years will be addressed through potential course re-design and faculty professional development through Quality Matters,” Alexander added.
“Quality Matters is excited to play a role in this significant initiative. Our framework provides the tools, processes, and support for faculty and staff to review courses and to help support a culture of quality that Calhoun is creating,” said Deb Adair, Executive Director of Quality Matters.
“Building and revising courses based on a shared, consistent application of quality standards, and ensuring the involvement and training for faculty in the process, Calhoun will start to see the benefits for students and learn first-hand from their data on student success about the long term efficacy of the QM continuous improvement process.”
