We are looking for the following instruments: Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Baritone Sax), Drum Set, Bass (upright and electric), Piano, and Guitar. We will also add vocalists (male and female) and a sound crew (sound/lighting). The group rehearses at The Alabama Center for the Performing Arts (Decatur, AL) on M/W, 1:30pm – 3:30pm (Jazz Rehearsal Room). Students are encouraged to audition early for open vacancies and may start immediately! We have already started rehearsing the group!

$500, $1000, $1500, and $2000 scholarships are available! To schedule an audition or for more information, please contact Dr. Leder at 256-260-3058 or matthew.leder@calhoun.edu.

Vocalists: Prepare 3 selections in a variety of genres (Choose from each category: Country, Rock, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Jazz, etc.) and will be asked to sing with a Karoke track. Lyrics do not have to be memorized for the audition. Pick selections that best demonstrate your ability and range.

Horn players (Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone): Prepare major scales (will ask 2 random scales), a chromatic scale (full range of your instrument to check range), and a prepared piece of your choosing that best demonstrates your ability (etude, solo, transcription, etc.).

  • Optional (not required): Improvise over a blues or jazz standard. There will also be a short sight reading excerpt (just to check your level of reading).

Drum Set: Demonstrate a few grooves (swing, rock, ballad with brushes, Latin, New Orleans street beat, gospel, etc.) and a short drum solo. It is okay if you are not familiar with all of the styles, but please be able to demonstrate your best abilities on the drum set.

Piano: Please prepare a prepared piece of your choosing (preferred jazz, gospel, or popular music, but anything that demonstrates your ability on the piano). Ideally, it would be great to be able to comp a blues and be able to read a set of chord changes. There will also be a short sight reading excerpt (just to check your level of reading).

Guitar: Please prepare a prepared piece of your choosing (preferred rock, country, jazz). Also, be able to comp a blues and demonstrate a short solo. There will also be a short sight reading / chord chart excerpt to check your level of reading.

Bass: Please prepare a prepared piece of your choosing. Also, be able to walk a blues. There will also be a short sight reading / chord chart excerpt to check your level of reading.

Sound Crew: Interview and demonstration of sound board / lighting.
