Calhoun Community College will recognize its Top 10 Students for the 2020-2021 academic year during a special Honors Day Program. The event will be held on Friday, April 30, Calhoun’s Decatur campus, Kelley Gymnasium, 6250 US Hwy 31 N, Tanner, AL. The event is closed to the public but will be live-streamed on Youtube.

According to Carla Swinney, Calhoun’s Coordinator for Student Advocacy, Special Projects, and Discipline, students that have a minimum GPA of 3.7 and have completed at least 35 semester hours qualify to be considered for the Top Ten Student competition. Calhoun’s Student Services Department hosts an annual self-nomination process, which allows those students who are deemed academically eligible to apply. Once those students have applied, a designated committee consisting of Calhoun’s faculty and staff reviews each nomination packet to determine those students to be considered as finalists for this distinctive honor.

“Each year, we receive a large number of applications, which makes the judging process so competitive,” commented Dr. Patricia Wilson, Calhoun’s Vice President of Student Services. “We are excited to announce that this year’s Top 10 Students are not only made up of highly driven scholars, but they have already demonstrated their exceptional leadership qualities and academic excellence during their time at Calhoun and for that, we are very proud,” added Wilson.

Barry “McCall” Atchison – is an Advanced Manufacturing major from Hartselle, Alabama. He and was chosen as the only dual enrollment student welder for the Dept. of Defense Project MFG Competition Team last year. He is a member of both the Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta honor societies. He has received many welding awards during his tenure at Calhoun through competitions like Skills USA. Barry is active in his community through his volunteer work with various children’s programs at church. He also serves as a mentor to other welding students. Barry’s goal is to become a multi-craft Aerospace Manufacturing professional and oversee large manufacturing projects. His GPA is a 4.0.

Delanie Compton – is a Speech-Language Pathology major from Moulton, Alabama. She is a Presidential Honor Scholar student, as well as a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Delanie is active in her community through several projects related to her church. Some of her duties include nursery worker, Vacation Bible School worker, and collecting items for the homeless. Delanie plans to attend the University of Alabama and complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Communicative Disorders, and eventually obtain a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Her goal is to one day work in a hospital with patients who have suffered strokes in order to help them swallow correctly. Her GPA is 4.0.

Guy Greenhaw – is an Advanced Manufacturing/Welding major from Athens, Alabama. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and he enjoys running cross country. He is active in his community through his volunteer work with Learn to Read, as well as local 5K and 50K events. Guy is passionate about welding and he plans to pursue his education at Auburn University by obtaining a degree in Building Construction Science. His goal is to eventually start his own construction or welding business. His GPA is 3.8.

Sarah Khouri – is a Cyber Security major from Huntsville, Alabama. She has been active in her community through her involvement in organizations that helped provide safe places for kids in school to enjoy their time and participate in educational and extracurricular activities. “Giving without receiving” is Sarah’s motto. Therefore, she has practiced this through her volunteer work with schools. Sarah’s goal is to continue her studies and ultimately obtain a Master’s Degree in order to work with governments and companies to advance their technology and make the world a better place. Her GPA is 4.0.

Tyler Legere – is an Electrical and Computer Engineering major from Madison, Alabama. He currently serves as the pitcher for the Calhoun Warhawks Baseball Team. He has been named to the NJCAA All-Academic Honors Team for Baseball for the last two years. He is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Tyler’s father is a retired Navy Pilot; therefore he enjoys volunteering with the Madison American Legion Post 229 by placing flags and wreaths at Veteran’s gravesites in Madison cemeteries. His goal is to attend Lipscomb University to pursue a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as continue playing baseball. His GPA is 3.9.

Mallory Lott – is a Business Accounting major from Madison, Alabama. She is a member of Calhoun’s Lady Warhawks Softball Team. She was named to the NJCAA All-Academic Honors First Team for Softball this year. She is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Mallory is active in her community through volunteering with her brother’s wheelchair basketball team. Her goal is to obtain a degree in Accounting at the University of Alabama and to pursue a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Forensic Accountant. Her GPA is 4.0.

Sarah Prater – is a Business Administration major from Madison, Alabama. She is an active member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society through her roles as Officer of Public Relations and College Project Associate Chair. Sarah is active in her community through her volunteer work with the Ark Inc. Shelter by cleaning out cat rooms and socializing the cats. Her goal is to graduate with her Associate’s Degree from Calhoun in Business and ultimately create a non-profit animal shelter that will rehabilitate animals with behavioral problems. She also wants to educate the community on pet behavior and care. Her GPA is 4.0.

Jenna Marie Sica – is a General Studies major from Decatur, Alabama. She serves as Secretary for the Calhoun Warhawks ambassador organization. She is also a member of the Calhoun Chorale, as well as the Sigma Kappa Delta and Phi Theta Kappa honor societies. She serves her community through her volunteer work as a teacher of archery to sixth through eighth-grade students for the Centershot Archery League. Jenna’s ultimate goal is to transfer to Mississippi State University and obtain an Animal and Dairy Science Degree in order to become pursue her dream of becoming a Veterinarian. Her GPA is 3.8.

Brenna Sullivan – is a Nursing major from Madison, Alabama. She is an active member of the Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society, as well as the Student Nurse Association, and the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Brenna serves her community through her personal efforts to help in ways such as initiating, planning, and executing a coat drive for the children at a local hospital. Her goal is to eventually obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Auburn University and pursue a graduate dual-track advanced practice degree, culminating in both Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Doctorate-level Nurse Anesthetist. She hopes to use her skills as a trauma-specialized nurse anesthetist in flight nursing. Her GPA is 3.8.

Easton Williamson – is a General Studies major from Hartselle, Alabama. He serves as a Student Government Association Senator and is a member of both the Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta honor societies. Easton serves his community by serving as a tutor and a coach with local athletic organizations. His goal is to obtain Bachelor’s Degrees in both Finance and Economics from the University of Alabama. He would like to complete an internship working for a large investment firm on Wall Street and eventually create his own Venture Capital Firm. His GPA is 3.8.
