What Courses Can Dual Enrollment Students Take Through Calhoun?
Any college-level courses in English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, or social science; any career/technical courses; or any other general education transfer courses such as electives that are agreed upon by the school system and the college are open to eligible students. The Dual Enrollment ACCS Policy does not allow for students to enroll in any courses taken on an audit basis. Prerequisites may be met by completion of the Accuplacer Placement Test and/or minimum levels on the ACT or SAT in English and Mathematics. Contact the Dual Enrollment staff to schedule an appointment or to answer any additional questions regarding eligible courses or pre-requisite requirements. A link to the college class schedule (including semester information and important dates) can be accessed on the Calhoun website.
Where & When Will I Take My College Classes?
High School students may take Dual Enrollment courses on any Calhoun campus (ACA- Alabama Center for the Arts in Downtown Decatur, Decatur Campus, Huntsville-Research Park Site or Distance Learning/Online) if approved by your counselor.
Many local high schools also offer Dual Enrollment course options taught at their high school campus during the regular school day, by credentialed Calhoun adjunct instructors. Students are encouraged to work closely with their high school counselor when selecting course options to ensure your college & high school schedules align. We understand that high school students have busy schedules which often include participation in athletic/sport programs, extra-curricular activities and part time jobs, so our team will help you to find classes that work seamlessly with your existing schedule.
Which Courses Will Transfer to Other Colleges or Universities?
Calhoun Community College is fully accredited by the Southern Associated of Colleges and Schools; therefore, most all of our courses will transfer to other schools or 4-year institutions. However, we strongly encourage students to check with their future college or university in which they plan to attend to confirm degree requirements, prior to enrollment – this is to confirm that students are only taking classes that fulfill their particular objectives. Students are welcome to visit the Calhoun Advising Department which contains information about the Alabama Transfers Guide and can help provide more information about the transfer of courses between area colleges and universities. It is recommended that students only enroll in the classes necessary to accomplish their individual academic & long-term educational goals, particularly if you have already selected your major or area of concentration in which you plan to pursue.
How Much Does it Cost?
Tuition Charges are calculated by credit hour, and most courses are usually 3 to 4 credit hours each. Students may review estimated tuition charges by selecting the Tuition Fees & Calculator. Please be advised that even if you are taking a class taught on your high school campus, the tuition/fees remain the same as if you were taking a class online or on our campus. A detailed description of fees is also provided on the tuition calculator webpage.

Why Are There Holds on My Account?
All Dual Enrollment students will have a “Dual Enrollment Hold” placed on their student account upon Admission to the college. The ‘DE’ hold will only be released once the student has graduated high school. This Hold will prevent dual enrollment students from being able to alter or make any changes online to their college class schedules each semester, prompting students to contact a member of the Dual Enrollment staff to do so.
Other holds on student accounts should be addressed with the appropriate department (ex. Admissions, Business Office, Financial Aid, etc.).
Will SAT, ACT or Placement Test Scores be Required?
Dually enrolled students registering for college-level English or math courses must be placed into courses using the current ACCA- approved placement guidelines. Students who do not register for college-level English or math courses are not required to take any English or math placement test, regardless of their grade levels. Students must meet all applicable prerequisites prior to enrolling in courses. Placement scores are required in order to meet the prerequisites for many science classes. Many school systems have established their own score policy for allowing students entry into their approved dual enrollment programs, so please consult with your counselor or dual enrollment representative for questions. Placement Testing may be scheduled once students have been assigned their Student ID Number (A#), but please confirm which portions of the test you’ll need before scheduling.
