GED Testing for 16 & 17 Year Olds

16 and 17-year-olds can take the GED in Alabama by submitting documentation for approval – parental permission, proof of residency, proof of withdrawal, and test scores (if applicable).  Follow the steps below.  Links to forms are included.

Step 1: Create an Account

All test candidates should first create an account at GED.com

Step 2: Prepare Documents

16 Public Notarized Certificate of Exemption Notarized and signed Parental Permission Form Copy of Alabama ID/Driver’s License/Permit GED or TABE Test Scores*
16 Non-Public Submit one of the following indicating withdrawal date: withdrawal form, signed letter on letterhead from principal, parental notice of withdrawal from coursework Notarized and signed Parental Permission Form Copy of Alabama ID/Driver’s License/Permit GED or TABE Test Scores*
17 Public Notarized Exit Interview Form Notarized and signed Parental Permission Form Copy of Alabama ID/Driver’s License/Permit
17 Non-Public Submit one of the following indicating withdrawal date: withdrawal form, signed letter on letterhead from principal, parental notice of withdrawal from coursework Notarized and signed Parental Permission Form Copy of Alabama ID/Driver’s License/Permit

*TABE test scores (in all three sub-skill tests) at a minimum of ASE Low, with a grade equivalent of 9.0 or higher OR GED® Ready practice test scores in Math and RLA of “Likely to Pass.” GED and TABE exams must be taken in the presence of an approved examiner at Calhoun.

Step 3: Hold Removal

After the GED Testing Office has received, reviewed, and approved all documentation and test scores, the test candidate’s age restriction hold will be removed.  The test candidate will then be able to register on GED.com.

Documents and test scores can be submitted to the GED Testing office on either Calhoun campus:

  • Decatur Campus | Adult Education & Testing Building, Room 110
  • Huntsville Campus | Sparkman Building Lower Level – Classroom 20 or Office 10
