Decatur, AL — The Adult Education Department at Calhoun Community College is now offering free GED classes on site at Decatur Youth Services (DYS), 1202 5th Avenue, SW, B. Classes are offered each Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30- 9:00 pm.
“We are working with DYS to offer “GED Boost Days” on September 4 and 6 to encourage those interested in our programs to come out, get their questions answered, and register for classes,” stated Dana Wolfe, director of Adult Education at Calhoun. “Those wanting to begin GED classes may come by DYS at either 8:00am or 5:00pm on those days to start the process,” Wolfe added.
According to Wolfe, Calhoun’s Adult Education program offers free adult literacy, basic academic skills, GED preparation, Employability Skills through AIDT Ready to Work, Career Pathway Programs, ASVAB and ACT tutoring and English as a Second Language instruction.
“Each learner works at his or her own pace and all instructional materials are available at no cost to the student,” commented Wolfe. “Any adult who is at least 18 years of age and not presently enrolled in school may participate in the Adult Education programs. Students ages 16 – 17 may enter Adult Education Services with proper approval and paperwork. A picture ID is required for orientation and two forms of ID are required for GED testing services.
“Earning your diploma can be the difference you need to get a better job and access more opportunities so you can improve your life. As our slogan says, ‘We live to make a difference!,” Wolfe added.
GED services are free, open-enrollment programs allowing adults to enroll at any time. An individual program of study is planned based on one’s goals and skill level as determined by assessment tests given at time of enrollment. Classes are available at convenient locations and times to meet the needs of the adult learner.
