Calhoun Community College Assistant Baseball Coach Watkins to Lead Team During Search for New Coach

August 22, 2018

Decatur, AL — Alan Watkins, assistant baseball coach at Calhoun Community College, will lead the college’s team in the interim as a search takes place for a permanent replacement for former head baseball coach Mike Burns, who recently resigned to accept a position with Decatur City Schools.

Entering his third season as part of the Calhoun baseball program, Watkins helped lead the Warhawks 2017-18 team to the Alabama Community College Conference tournament this year.

“We are pleased that Coach Watkins has agreed to lead our baseball team during this interim period,” commented Dr. Joe Burke, interim president at the College. “I have great confidence that he will be able to move our program forward as we look forward to our upcoming season. The fact that Coach Watkins has been associated with our program for several years and is familiar with our players will help in making this transitional phase easier for all involved,” Burke added.

Watkins has a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from the University of North Alabama, where he played collegiate football and baseball. A certified Driver Education instructor, he has over 24 years of coaching and teaching experience. Watkins is a graduate of Austin High School, where he served as head baseball coach for ten seasons.
