Calhoun Hosts Free Cybersecurity Events to the Community

October 28, 2020

The Calhoun Community College Business and Computer Information Systems (CIS) division are excited to host two free virtual cyber events for the community in recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Calhoun is designated by the Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in cyber defense for two-year colleges.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a collaborative effort between the federal government and industry to educate citizens about the importance of cybersecurity. According to Dr. James Payne, Calhoun’s Dean of Business & CIS, “We live in a heavily digital world, and the public must understand that cybersecurity not only affects businesses, but it also affects everyone in the world as well.”

These series of events are designed to inform and educate the public on cybersecurity topics such as:

  • Free Class: Introduction to Cybersecurity
    Presenter: Cisco Networking Academy
Estimated time to complete: 15 hours (self-paced)
    Dates: October 28 – November 30

  • Presentation Topic: Introduction to Web Development Security
Presenter: Justin Bennet, Senior Software Engineer
    Date: October 29, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

“For those who do not have time to participate in the free course, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the Introduction to Web Development Security presentation,” commented Andrew Gregory, Calhoun’s Center for Cybersecurity Education Coordinator and CIS Instructor. “Justin Bennett currently works at Artsy.net, which is a website that provides a unique online marketplace for a growing database of 1,000,000 works of art, architecture, and design by 100,000 different artists,” said Gregory. “He previously worked at Scripps Network Interactive, who produces popular shows such as HGTV, Discovery, and Food Network. He has also worked for Vencore Inc. and ADTRAN, which makes us confident that his past experiences will be a great benefit to all who attend,” he added.
