Calhoun to Host Open House for New Huntsville Campus STAR Institute Tutoring Center

September 10, 2018

Huntsville, AL – Calhoun Community College has planned a ribbon cutting/open house event this Thursday, September 13, 2018, to introduce its new STAR (Student Tutoring and Academic Resource) Institute, located in the Sparkman Building Student Success Center at the college’s Huntsville campus. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is open to Calhoun students, faculty and staff as well as the general public.

The Huntsville campus STAR Institute is the second full-service tutoring center at Calhoun. The Decatur campus center officially opened its doors in spring 2017. According to Valerie Cox, Calhoun’s STAR Institute director, the centers provide free, one-on-one tutoring in all subject areas, as well as success seminars throughout each semester.

“Student success is our number one priority at Calhoun Community College, and every effort is made to provide our students with programs and services that can assist them in obtaining and reaching their academic goals,” Cox said.

During Thursday’s ribbon cutting/open house event, comments will be provided by Dr. Joe Burke, Calhoun’s interim president; Mark Branon, dean of the college’s Huntsville campus; and members of the STAR Institute staff. Tours of the center will be provided at the end of the program. The Alabama National Guard is sponsoring refreshments for the event.
