1098-T Tuition Statement

Your 1098-T is a tuition statement required by the Internal Revenue Service that is provided to you from your college or university for the purpose of reporting your amounts paid for the qualifying tuition and related expenses, as well as other information. This form is made available to you no later than January 31st each year to assist you and your tax preparer in claiming eligible education credits, if applicable, on your tax return.

Students can choose to log into MyCalhoun and go to Student, Student Account, Make a Payment, and ‘Accept’ if you would like to have paperless 1098-T.  This is also where you can print your form. Once you select this option, a paper copy will NOT be mailed to you.  You can always change this selection at any time from MyCalhoun.

If you do not choose this option, a form will be mailed to your last mailing address as of December 31st of that tax year.  It is the responsibility of the student to update any changes to their address by December 31 of each calendar year.  Once printed and mailed, the college will not make address changes in preparation for reprinting or mailing a form.

If you are waiting on a 1098-T form and haven’t received it yet, there may be several reasons:

  1. Your mailing address on file was incorrect as of December 31st.
  2. Payments were not received during the calendar year.
  3. You were excluded because all of your box amounts for the calendar year are zero.
  4. You were excluded because you were enrolled in courses for which no academic credit is awarded. If you would like a detailed receipt for those programs, you can request one via email to sandie.dutton@calhoun.edu.

Please keep in mind that the 1098-T form only provides amounts paid in that tax year, meaning from January 1 to December 31st. If the student registers and pays for a spring class before December 31st, the tuition would be reported on this year’s tax in the year paid. You can always double-check the box amounts reported on your form in your MyCalhoun by going to Student, Student Account, Tax Notification, and clicking on the amount in the boxes to view the terms that make up the amount in question.

Box 1. Payments: reflects the total payments received by an eligible educational institution for that tax year from any source for qualified tuition and related expenses less any reimbursements or refunds made during that tax year that relate to those payments received during the year.

Box 2. Reserved for future use.

Box 3. Reserved for future use.

Box 4 Prior Year Payments: reflects any adjustment made by an eligible educational institution for prior year qualified tuition and related expenses that were reported on a prior year Form 1098-T. This amount may reduce any allowable education credit.

Box 5 Grants and Scholarships: reflects the total scholarships or grants administered and processed by the eligible educational institution. The amount of scholarships or grants for the calendar year (including those not reported by the institution) may reduce the amount of the education credit you claim for the year.

Box 6 Prior Year Grants and Scholarships: reflects adjustments made by an eligible institution for prior year grants or scholarships that were reported on a prior year Form 1098-T.  This amount may require you to file an Amended Tax Return for the prior year.

Box 7 is checked if the Box 1 Payments includes amounts for an academic period beginning in January through March of the next year.

Box 8 is checked you were considered at least half-time for your courses of study at your institution.

The amount on Form 1098-T might be different from the amount you actually paid and are deemed to have paid.  You must also otherwise qualify for any education benefit but must be able to demonstrate that you (or a dependent) were enrolled at an eligible educational institution and can substantiate the payment of qualified tuition and related expenses.

Calhoun Community College is unable to provide you with individual tax advice, so you will need to consult with an expert tax professional.  We are also unable to provide you with the Federal Tax ID as this information is provided to you on your 1098-T tax form.
