Calhoun Community College offers multiple opportunities for you to achieve your education and career goals. Our programs are structured to meet different schedule and learning needs. GED Preparation classes are offered free of charge. You can also take your GED test at either campus. Click on the links in the sections below for more information.

GED Preparation Classes

What We Offer

  • Free classes that cover all sections of the GED Exam:
    • Mathematical Reasoning
    • Reasoning through Language Arts
    • Science
    • Social Studies
  • Flexible class scheduling with morning, afternoon, and evening options
  • Multiple locations, including Decatur and Huntsville campuses, and several community sites
  • Online learning
    • Designed for eligible students who are not able to attend class in person or prefer to attend online classes.
    • Students attend regular in-person Orientation/Registration at Huntsville or Decatur Campuses.
    • Qualifying students are assigned to the Online class. Students must be at a 9th-grade reading level to enter the online class

How to Enroll in Classes

  • Attend two 3-hour enrollment sessions. Both sessions are required for entry into Adult Education classes. Attendance at both sessions is Mandatory prior to beginning class.
  • Orientation/Registrations held nearly every week on both campuses. Morning and evening registration sessions are available. Both campuses have the same schedule.
  • Orientation/Registration sessions are walk-in only. No pre-registration is required.
    • Choose the session times you want- morning or evening. You must attend both sessions in the same week and time slots. Download Enrollment Schedule
  • Have documents to show eligibility for Adult Education Programs.  Bring these required documents to orientation.  Physical/paper forms only are accepted.  Digital copies are not accepted.

Eligibility:

Any person who is at least 16 years of age, lives or works in Alabama, not presently enrolled in school (public or private), and has correct documents. See Enrollment Schedule for Required Document List. Students less than 18 years old must have additional documents. See chart below for documents required for 16-17 year olds.

What to Bring to the Enrollment Sessions:

You will not be allowed to register without correct documents.

Required Documents: Valid Photo ID, Proof of Alabama Residence (Lease, utility bill, bank statement, etc.), Social Security Card/ Tax ID Number, AND one or more of the documents listed below.

Adult Education programs have been mandated by the US Department of Education to implement processes to verify the citizenship or legal status of ALL individuals being served.

The U.S. Department of Education acceptable forms of verification for establishing eligibility for federally funded Adult Education Programs are:

  • US Government issued photo identification cards
  • US Birth Certificates
  • US Passports
  • DHS issued immigration documentation – VISA, letters allowing entry into the US
    • VISAs NOT allowed for AE entry: B, F, J All Non-Immigrant visas except U – Victim of Criminal Activity, and T- Victim of Human Trafficking. For more information, click here: Visa Categories from U.S. State Department
  • Certificate of US Citizenship or Naturalization
  • Alabama Voter Registration Card
  • Alabama Conceal Carry permit
  • ALL FEDERAL VERIFIED DOCUMENTS MUST BE VALID. ALL FEDERAL VERIFIED DOCUMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED IN PAPER/PHYSICAL FORM. DOCUMENTS IN DIGITAL FORM WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Due to renovations in the Adult Education Department, there will be No Orientation in Huntsville the week of November 10th. Students wanting to register that week can attend Orientation on the Decatur Campus.

Testing Cost

Standard GED test fee: $144 or $36 per section.
Sections can be scheduled and paid for individually.

What to Bring to Test Day

  • Valid Government-issued identification card (Ex. Driver’s license or passport).
  • Make sure the document has not expired
  • Must include photo, signature, date of birth, and an expiration date.

After Passing the GED

You will immediately receive an official digital transcript and diploma which you can download for your records. CHECK YOUR EMAIL for the Link!

  • You can also request a printed diploma free of charge which will be sent to you in regular mail.
  • You will immediately receive a secure electronic PDF version of you official digital transcript and diploma which you can download for your records. CHECK YOUR EMAIL for the Link! You will have 60 days to download, print, or save the documents up to 7 times for free.
  • You can also request a printed diploma free of charge which will be sent to you in regular mail. Carefully follow the instructionJpresented during the ordering process.
    • Go to GED.com and log in to your account. You will see a link. This link can only be used ONE time.
      • Navigate to MY Scores
      • Select the Order Duplicates link
      • Select DIPLOMA option
      • Select the PRINTED DIPLOMA- FREE OPTION
      • Fill in name and address of person/organization you want to receive the printed diploma

You can also purchase additional Copies of Your Transcript and Diploma for school and / job applications, employers, etc. using your GED.com account. These can be paid for with a credit card.

  • You can participate in the annual Calhoun Community College Adult Education Graduation Ceremony held in May each year.
  • You will be eligible for a Free 4-credit hour course at any Alabama Community College. (Time limits for use.)
    • For use at Calhoun, take a copy of your GED transcript to the Business Office on either Campus.
