RN to EMT Bridge Program

Are you a licensed Registered Nursing with professional experience in an Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, or Air or Ground Medical Transport setting? Are you seeking to expand your scope of practice by obtaining national certification and Alabama licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

Calhoun Community College’s RN to EMT Bridge Program offers a streamlined pathway for experienced RNs to transition into the field of prehospital care. This hybrid program includes online didactic instruction and a required 16-hour hands-on lab component held on the Huntsville Research Park campus and 2 Ambulance Clinicals (12 hours each for total of 24 hours).

Program Admission Requirements

To be considered for enrollment, applicants must meet all of the following criteria and submit the required documentation:

  • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse license (license status will be verified).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • Completion of a trauma course, such as TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), ITLS (International Trauma Life Support), or an equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of verifiable work experience as an RN in an Emergency Department, ICU, or Air Medical/Flight service.
  • Professional résumé clearly detailing relevant experience.
  • Employer verification letter printed on official company letterhead confirming at least two years of qualifying work experience in the specified settings.
  • Applicants who do not meet these criteria are encouraged to consider enrolling in our traditional EMT course (EMS 118) instead.

How to Apply

Students must qualify and be accepted to register for the RN to EMT Bridge Program.

Program fee – $599

  1. Submit proof of active unencumbered licensure: rn2emt@calhoun.edu
  2. Submit employment verification. Request letter of employment. Requires proof of 2 years experience in ICE, ER, or Flight.
  3. Register for Classes!

Next Steps Process to submit application

  1. Review the requirements and confirm that you meet the criteria for the program
  2. Use the QR code to fill out initial interest form
  3. You will receive an email with details and submission requests sent to rn2emt@calhoun.edu for the following:
    1. Proof of active unencumbered licensure
    2. Verification of employment. Send Employment letter must include proof of at least 2 years’ experience of ICU, ER, Ground or Air Medical Transport.
  4. Once accepted, you will receive payment link
