Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Program at Calhoun

Calhoun Community College’s Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) program prepares students for a fast-paced career in emergency medical services, qualified to serve as mid-level first responders to persons with a medical emergency due to accident or illness.

Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification exam and apply for state licensure.

Graduates of Calhoun’s EMS programs are prepared to work in diverse settings, from ambulance services to hospitals. With certifications at multiple levels, students can pursue specialized roles in areas like special operations, industrial safety, and wilderness EMS.

What AEMTs Do

Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) serve as first responders to persons with a medical emergency due to accident or illness.  AEMTs have the knowledge and skills in non-invasive life support techniques of the EMT along with some invasive techniques such placement of blind insertion airway devices, intravenous fluid administration, and some pharmacological therapies.

AEMTs may work for private ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals or other rescue services. Career opportunities also exist in areas such as wilderness EMS, special operations, special events, hazardous materials, industrial safety, quality management and other fields.


About Calhoun’s AEMT Program

A goal of the CCC Emergency Medical Services Program is to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program at Calhoun Community College meets the state education requirements for AEMT certification in the state of Alabama. Calhoun Community College has not determined if the AEMT program at Calhoun Community College meets the state education requirements in any other state, any U.S. Territory, or the District of Columbia.
