Studying Medical Laboratory Science at Calhoun

Calhoun Community College’s Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) programs equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to work in clinical laboratories. Students gain hands-on experience performing essential tests that aid in diagnosing and treating diseases.

Medical Laboratory Assistant, Short-Term Certificate

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Certificate can be completed in  just 2 semesters.  An evening program will be offered beginning fall 2024 semester. Classes will be held on the Huntsville-Research Park Site on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6 – 9 PM. Students will complete the program with a clinical learning opportunity in the following spring semester.

In addition to employment in a hospital lab, the MLA certificate can be used as a stepping stone to a degree and national certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Enrollment in MLA is limited to the first twelve persons who register. The Alabama Community College System is offering reimbursement scholarship funds to students who complete the program and obtain national certification; other funding may be available.

Medical Laboratory Assistant, Short-Term Certificate

The A.A.S. degree in Medical Laboratory Technician prepares students for entry-level positions in clinical labs. Graduates will learn the principles of medical testing, data analysis, and diagnostics while developing hands-on skills that are critical to a career in this field.
