Freshman Seminar

Welcome to Calhoun!

We understand that the college process can be new and sometimes overwhelming. To set you up for success, we have created this Orientation course offered in two different formats, just for first time freshmen and non-traditional students.

Freshman Seminar requires tuition and fees regardless of the format you choose. For your convenience, we offer both traditional and online formats (ORI 110 only).

  • ORI 110 Freshman Seminar (1 Credit Hour)
  • ORI 105 Orientation & Student Success (3 Credit Hours)

By the end of the course, you’ll have a personalized plan and be well-connected with your peers at Calhoun, ensuring a strong start to your college journey.

Is Freshman Seminar Required for You?

Freshman Seminar is a required course for all incoming freshmen and transfer students with fewer than 12 credit hours. That said, there are some students who are exempt from taking Freshman Seminar.

Students Exempt from Freshman Seminar

You are exempt from taking Freshman Seminar if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • Dual Enrollment or Accelerated High School Students (until they become a first-time freshman)
  • Completed an Associate Degree or Higher
  • Completed ORI 110 or Equivalent at another institution
  • Transferred to Calhoun with 12 or More College Credit Hours
  • Presidential Honors Program Students (equivalent course required)

ORI 110: Freshman Seminar

(1 Credit Hour)

This course is ideal for students placing into college-level coursework who are comfortable with a fast-paced, technology-driven learning environment. Formats offered include full-term, mini-mester, and distance learning. 

Focuses on developing technology skills, exploring career options, and creating a personalized program of study. Students will:

  • Work with advisors to create a strong academic plan.
  • Enhance their research and critical thinking skills.
  • Finish the course with resources and a pathway to their degree.

ORI 105: Orientation & Student Success

(3 Credit Hours)

This full-semester course (16 weeks) provides additional support for students looking to improve study skills and personal effectiveness. It’s ideal for students with special interests or those who need extra academic guidance.

Designed to help students explore potential career paths and majors. It includes:

  • Time management and organization
  • Critical thinking strategies
  • Study skills for college and beyond
  • Assessments to align interests, skills, and values with career options.
  • Insights from Career Services on internships, goal setting, and decision-making.
