Welcome to Service Learning at Calhoun Community College!

The service learning program adds practical hands-on experience to the student learning process. Service learning provides faculty members with an optional teaching tool to encourage critical thinking skills in their students. Service learning benefits the College by increasing community awareness. It facilitates a mutually beneficial relationship between the College and the community. Ultimately, the service learning program benefits our community service agencies and gives them a chance to participate in the educational process.

Calhoun’s service learning program is designed to offer students the opportunity to improve academic learning and develop personal skills through participation in structured service projects that meet community needs. Thank you for your willingness to participate in this program.

Interested in offering a service learning component in your course?

  • Offer the option of a service learning track in your course as a graded assignment (or extra credit, if you prefer). This track should include a reflectional component. You may view this example of a Service Learning Reflection Assignment, and feel free to use it!
  • Select one or more agencies of your choice from the list of currently participating agencies and provide their contact information to your students. If you know an agency that you want to work with, but they are not listed, please have them complete the steps listed on the Community Partners page
  • Require a minimum number of hours of community service per semester (i.e. 10/20 hours, or whatever you decide is appropriate)
  • Guide students to the Student Volunteer page; this will give them all the necessary information on how to complete the right steps to register their volunteer project and receive credit.
  • Make a timesheet available to your students.
  • Give students a deadline of when to submit their timesheets and reflective assignment to you.
