If you have never used your VA educational benefits before, you will need to complete a couple of steps depending on the chapter for which you qualify. Please remember that it will take the Department of Veterans Affairs at least eight weeks to process your application and send you a Certificate of Eligibility.
Bills (Chapters)
Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
Steps to apply for your benefits:
- Submit 22-1990 Application for Education Benefits. This can be done online at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/apply.asp. Please remember that it can take up to eight weeks for VA to process your application and send you a Certificate of Eligibility.
- Complete the VA Statement of Understanding.
- Submit Certificate of Eligibility and VA Statement of Understanding to the VA Certifying Official on either campus.
- Submit VA Certification Form online once you have registered for classes.
As with all current veteran education benefits, Chapter 33 recipients are required to pay all tuition/fees by the payment deadlines applicable to all students. Students that have submitted a Certificate of Eligibility before the deadline can have their schedules “held” until payment is received from VA.
MGIB (Chapter 30)

Survivors’ & Dependents’ Education Assistance Program (Chapter 35)
