More Than 50 Students Will Earn Degrees Or Certificates From Calhoun Before Graduating High School

May 11, 2023

This year, Calhoun Community College is excited to announce that four students will graduate with Associate of Science degrees from the College before obtaining their high school diplomas. An additional fifty high-schoolers will earn short-term certificates in various disciplines from Calhoun also before obtaining high school diplomas.

“This should come as no surprise that the power of dual enrollment is truly undeniable,” commented Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “Each year, our dual enrollment numbers increase within our area high schools, and each year we produce work-ready students to industry before they are even able to finish their high school diploma. These young people are learning hands-on skilled trades in all areas of technology, engineering, business, healthcare as well as cyber security and are ready to enter the workforce immediately,” added Hodges.

According to Gwen Baker, Calhoun’s Director of Dual Enrollment, during the 2022-23 academic year (summer, fall and spring) the College’s dual enrolment program included over 2,050 students. Of that number, the following four students from Limestone and Morgan Counties have qualified for graduation from Calhoun and will earn an associate of science degree in the following disciplines:

  • Benjamin Blakely – Athens Bible School – Associate of Science Degree in General Studies; Short-Term Certificate in General Education
  • Spencer Holley – Brewer High School – Associate of Science Degree in General Studies; Short-Term Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing and General Education
  • Brylee Lake – Austin High School – Associate of Science Degree in General Studies; Short-Term Certificate in General Education
  • Laci Parham – Austin High School – Associate of Science Degree in General Studies; Short-Term Certificate in General Education

With the goal of increasing the number of high school students who enroll in the College’s dual enrollment program, $250 academic support scholarships are now being offered for students interested in enrolling this fall. “The scholarships will be paid from a previously awarded workforce funding grant,” says Baker. “We plan to award scholarships to students who apply on a first-come, first-serve basis until the funding is exhausted,” added Baker.
